Creative for a Second or Two

Creative for a Second is a project which brings together people from around the world who suffer with ME, as I do. 8 journals (and counting!) are going round the globe and people are making art! The art seems to either be a celebration of creativity for its own sake, or an expression of what living with ME means to the artist.

I was thrilled to be a part of this exciting project. A lot of the art already in the journal I received was quite heavy and sad, so I thought I would use my love of colour to bring a different slant to the book. I wanted to put out the message that there is always hope for sufferers of long-term illness and disability.

After the rain... comes the rainbow
This is one of my trademark-style doodles.

I am very ill... but I have hope
I took photos of all the pills I take on a daily basis, and used them to signify that the very embodiment of illness can still blossom into good health again. Had I made this artwork a week later, i would have had to fit 40 pills on the page, as my slipped disc worsened overnight!

My body is lead... But my heart can fly
The right-hand picture is a series of embroidered wavy lines. I pricked holes through both pages, sewing the right-hand page but leaving the holes visible on the left. I then doodled circles and lines in four shades of grey.

I've got that Rainbow Feeling

  1. Ooooh Nilly, wow, wow, wow!!! That's totally awesome! What a truly wonderful interpretation you have of your illness, and what ability to express it in your ART!! I just love this...

I particularly love all the pills with the flowers growing out of them! this is such a positive attitude.

It reminds me of putting flowers on my Rolls Royce (wheelchair) and painting the wheels etc. It's all about turning horrors into happiness, depressions into delights, and problems into praises!

    Love it.

PS Hope you feel better soon!!

  3. I found you through Shoshi's blog and love your input for the journals! Very inspirational.

Truth be told, I try to keep my illness(s) out of the light and away from my fellow artists/crafters. I disappear sometimes, always with the excuse that life happened or I got busy.... when in reality, I have been bedridden for 3.5 weeks. People just don't want to be around someone that talks about sad things, such as a chronic illness.

I chose early on in my illness to be a positive person and many times, that means not talking about the things that rule my physical body.

For me that has been a good thing, it kept me focused on constantly looking for something good to share.

I have stayed off of the messages boards, because for me, it was too exhausting and the focus was always on the negative. I need to save every bit of energy I have for living!

If more Illness related art was like yours - not only would it be more fun to make - it would shine a little positive light on chronic illness.
